A few years ago there was a study out that found the Chinese herb
yan hu suo (corydalis rhizome) effective for treating pain. We got several calls from people looking to buy it. People are still looking for alternatives to taking regular pain killers. Chinese herbs can be a good solution. We carry several formulas, mostly from Evergreen herbs, that use yan hu suo and many other Chinese herbs to specifically treat pain. We have formulas that treat specific types of pain, like chronic pain or acute pain, as well as formulas that treat specific locations like back pain or headaches. Many of the herbs for treating pain will increase circulation to the area. Add some herbs to cut inflammation and you have a pain formula. Most Chinese herbal formulas for pain (and most other things as well) will generally have from 6 to 15 herbs cooked together to increase synergy, then given to patients in pills or in powdered form. The powdered form is slightly stronger, but the taste is an issue with some people.

One thing that we treat quite often at the Acupuncture Center is allergies. We don't always get patients coming in directly for allergy issues (often we do), but people who come to us regularly, perhaps for other issues, soon figure out that we have some very good solutions for allergies. In Richmond, and most of Virginia, allergies are a problem. And most of the pharmaceutical solutions have some pesky side effects. So we end up adding points in many cases for allergies while treating other things. That's one of the benefits of an acupuncture treatment, that you can treat multiple things at once. You just have to add a couple of points. We have found, through years of trial and error, herbal formulas that are effective for allergies and with no side effects. In fact, Chinese herbs are actually good for you. I've had patients tell me that actually feel better overall on their formula. So most people are pleased with using Chinese medicine for allergies.
Treating back pain with acupuncture and cupping works even better sometimes when Chinese herbs are adding to the mix. Not all patients want or need to take herbs, but some will benefit from taking herbs in between treatments. With Chinese herbal formulations we are basically doing two things: First of all we are cutting inflammation. Injury, whether acute or chronic, usually comes with some level of inflammation and it can be essential for healing to cut some of this inflammation. Secondly in treating back pain with Chinese medicine we want to move the blood in the area. Most of the formulas we use for back pain will do both of these things to help healing take place. These formulas contain herbs that have been found to specifically target back pain. The formulas are extremely safe. There are virtually no side effects to Chinese herbs because the formulas have been modified and improved, sometimes for literally a thousand years. So, Chinese herbal formulations can be very specific for treating back pain and can speed up healing when used in between acupuncture treatments. One of our specialties at the Acupuncture Center is treating anxiety and depression. One reason that we have chosen to focus on this is because it is so prevalent in our society. Another reason is that acupuncture and Chinese herbs do such a good job at treating these conditions. Acupuncture is based on the concept of Chi, which is energy that runs around our body, much like blood does, that keeps up healthy. It is essential for good health that we have enough Chi and that it moves smoothly throughout our body. Stress and anxiety are so damaging to the body because they cause the Chi not to flow smoothly. An acupuncture treatment works on getting the Chi to flow smoothly, promoting a sense of calmness and very directly effecting the health of our body. We would concentrate on stress organs like the liver and kidney. We will sometimes recommend an herbal formula like one sometimes called 'Free and Easy Wanderer'. I like this formula because it is also a tonic and is making the body stronger to help it react better to stressful situations. We always attempt at least to treat the root of the problem and this can be done in this case. For more info on how we treat anxiety and stress click here.
